CHARITABLE STATUS

Since our failed application in 2002, the Charities Act 2006 has given greater recognition to environmental protection as a  a public benefit and charitable purpose. In consequence, the Committee decided to put a proposal to re-apply, to an Extraordinary General Meeting on 8th August 2008 for which members voted unanimously.

Proving public benefit is not an easy task for an environmental organisation, but we were able to satisfy the Charity Commissioners that our educational activities, our consulation responses and our constructive approach to policy changes and development projects, did constitute a benefit to the public at large.

The new charity is a company limited by guarantee, replacing the old voluntary organisation. It will still be known as The Wiggonholt Association.

THE SOUTH DOWNS NATIONAL PARK

Wiggonholt and its surroundings were not part of the two AONBs which covered the South Downs. The Countryside Agency had to be persuaded that the area fully met the criteria for inclusion in the designated boundary of the SDNP. This was achieved and most of the land between Pulborough and Storrington is now within the Park.

We want to be involved in the consultations leading to the formation of the National Park Authority and to play our part, if possible, as a member of that body offering local and environmental experience.

"WIGGONHOLT" ON THE WEY AND ARUN CANAL

Work began on the 45/50 seater electric boat, the "Wiggonholt", in the autumn of 2008. Sponsored by the Wiggonholt Association, it was named on the 9th May 09 by WA member Doreen Mann and used for the official opening of the Loxwood Bridge crossing. The boat has become the 'green' flagship of a fleet of smaller pleasure boats providing trips on the restored section of the Canal. It will carry literature on WA activities and invite membership.
